All the children who accede to our services are evaluated by the ophthalmologist together with the head of the team of ocularists. The fitting of the prosthesis, above all on a baby, must always be carried out under the care of an ophthalmologist.

TEMPORARY PROSTHESES

Children undergoing the removal of an eye (enucleation/evisceration) are fitted with a temporary prosthesis which will later be replaced by a customised one as soon as the scarring of the eye socket has healed. In the presence of an atrophic eye (due to trauma or disease) a temporary prosthesis is fitted which will later be replaced by a customised one after the adaptation period which is decided upon by the medical staff. Our medical and prosthetic team, in collaboration with the leading national and international children’s hospitals, has developed a customised technique for children born with ocular malformations (anophthalmia/microphthalmia): from the initial fitting we use an aesthetic prosthesis in place of a transparent conformer.

OUR CUSTOMISED PROSTHESES

All of our customised prostheses are made using the traditional technique of “moulage” (casting/moulding), thanks to our exchanges with international ocularists. The relief of the cast of the socket or of the eye permits us to obtain the maximum adherence between the socket/eye consenting an optimal movement of the prosthesis and the maximum comfort for the patient. All of the irises are hand-painted with three-dimensional colours, reproducing faithfully the collateral eye. Permitting the immediate aesthetic recovery for the child which is essential in bringing about his/her correct psychological development and without impeding social interaction with other children.

CUSTOMISED PATH

After the fitting of the customised prosthesis on the child there will be a personalised path of check-ups decided upon together with the parents of the young patient, in order to obtain the maximum comfort and the best possible aesthetic outcome. The parents of the young patient are trained in the use and maintenance of the prosthesis. From the age of five or six children will generally be able to manage the prosthesis independently.
